Sadly more than 200 melon-headed whales (considered to be mid-sized dolphins) recently ended up on Altar Beach on Boa Vista island in Cape Verde. It is thought that the leader of this group may have become disorientated. Many people tried to get these large creatures back into the sea, however, sadly more than 130 died on the beach. There were also fears for those that were got back into the sea, as they too may not survive.
Scientists have taken samples from some of the dead animals, in an attempt to understand what caused the dolphins to get stranded on the beach. The dead animals have been buried.
