Porto Novo is the town where all visitors to Santo Antão arrive. It has been the main port on Santo Antão since the early 1960’s. The local authority (Câmara Municipal) would like to renew the town’s relationship with the sea. With that in mind a new ‘Marginal Avenue’ (Avenida Marginal) is being constructed along the waterfront.
The intention of this Avenida Marginal project is to re-connect the town with the sea and also to rejuvenate the whole town. It is also planned to create leisure projects that will provide facilities for tourists as well as encouraging a healthy lifestyle. With a population in excess of 9,000, Porto Novo is the largest settlement on the island.
